The Network of Associations of Local Authorities of South-East Europe (NALAS) has begun implementation of a new regional initiative: Empowering Local Governments for Gender-Responsive Circular Economy Initiatives. The project is part of the broader Green Transformation: Circular Economy in the Western Balkans, implemented by GIZ on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

Running from July 2025 to December 2027, the project targets six Western Balkan economies: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia. It aims to strengthen the capacities of NALAS member associations and local governments to implement circular economy measures with a strong gender-responsive focus.

The project will deliver tailored training modules, develop a regional benchmarking report, and promote good practices in circular economy across the region. Awareness-raising, access to funding, and inclusive participation are key components of this initiative.

Through knowledge sharing, peer learning, and regional cooperation, NALAS supports municipalities in transitioning to more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient communities.
