Energy Efficiency
The NALAS Task Force on Energy Efficiency addresses the increasing issues with energy in South East Europe. As energy efficiency is an interdisciplinary field, this task brings together energy experts, municipal energy managers, mayors and other professionals who contribute together in mitigating the energy problems by proposing changes in the legislation, collecting best practices, encouraging better use of the available energy and employing renewable sources of energy.

Urban Planning
The NALAS Task Force on Urban Planning consists of regional urban planning experts representing member associations. It tackles urban planning issues common in the region, such us integration of informal settlements, inclusion of more stakeholders in the urban planning process and collection and analysis of the right parameters in what is known as "urban economics".

Sustainable Tourism
The NALAS Task Force on Sustainable Tourism is an emerging task force aimed to encourage tourism development in South East Europe based on sustainability principles. The role of the Task Force is to promote tourism policy, governance and operations that respect and protect the environment and biodiversity and foster social inclusion, while creating employment and income earning opportunities and contributing to socio-economic growth. This Task Force is hosted by the Association of Municipalities and Cities of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Fiscal Decentralization
The NALAS Task Force on Fiscal Decentralization consists of regional experts in local and intergovernmental finances representing member associations. The host association for this Task Force is the National Association of Local Governments of Bulgaria (NAMRB).

NALAS workshop on Project Cycle Management was organized on 16-17 July in Ptuj, Slovenia, in cooperation with Oikos, Slovenian consultancy company. The event was hosted by the Slovenian Association of Municipalities (SOS), while the participants were representatives of NALAS member associations’ staff responsible for project preparation and implementation. The purpose of the workshop was to get acquainted with Slovenian experiences on the use of EU funds, as well as to learn through tips and tricks on programming, funds available, preparation of project proposals and budgets according to the EU rules, as well as on the establishment of winning consortia.

In an effort to network its member associations on multiple levels, NALAS gathered Information Technology (IT) and Public Relations (PR) experts from the member associations in Ohrid, between 6 and 8 July 2008. The meeting was part of the activities of the NALAS Task Force on Association Development. In addition, the meeting was an effort to establish new communication channels for exchange of information between NALAS Knowledge Center and the member associations.

The guide addresses networking practitioners, as well as other professionals wishing to set up a network, but also established networkers will find some useful tips. It was developed by professionals with sound experience in designing and running networks.
This hands-on guide in concise A5 format describes on 140 pages how formal networks can be set up, managed and used in an efficient and effective way. The process-oriented approach is explained with a flow chart, and checklists summarize the crucial steps. A resource section provides relevant publications and websites.
'Work the Net' is one of the results of the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) project 'Networking, Information and Knowledge Management by Regional Organizations' (NeRO), which provided an exchange platform for information and knowledge management approaches and instruments between regional development organizations focusing on the management of natural resources in the Asian context.

The NALAS workshop on the Role of associations of local governments in training delivery to local authorities was held on 6-7 March 2008 in Skopje. This workshop is the first result of the newly launched NALAS program Quick response, a new service provided to NALAS members and the purpose of the workshop was to allow exchange of experiences between NALAS members, as well as with sister associations from other countries that have experience in providing training to local authorities. Besides experiences from South East Europe, participants were introduced to good and bad practices of Austria, Lithuania and the Council of Europe.

A new NALAS Task Force was formed last week in Ohrid, focused on the institutional development of the member association. The Association Development Task Force gathers top management staff from the NALAS member association and will develop activities for strengthening their capacities. Activities include financial sustainability workshops, donor forums, trainings for local governments, peer reviews, strengthening the NALAS Secretariat for quick response etc

The meeting on “Cooperation towards a Modern Local Government Association” took place in Vienna between 9 and 10 of July, 2007. It was hosted by the Austrian Association of Cities and Towns (AACT) and co-organized together with the Council of Europe, NALAS and the Council of European Municipalities and Regions. The purpose of the meeting was to explore opportunities for partnership between NALAS, other Local Government Associations and international organizations. The content of the CoE-UNDP Toolkit “Towards a modern local government association” was also discussed.
